Inquirer Story from Mason game

I just noticed while reading this story that the writer refers to Fouch and Neisler as "reserve guard" and "reserve forward". It seems like a needless distinction, especially given how much those guys contribute. It just sounds a bit awkward.

Saying "Neisler came off the bench to...", or "Fouch score 18 off the bench" just flows better.

When you only have 12 column inches, which equates to 384 words, you can't afford to waste five on something as petty as that.

From today's call. In bold is my favorite quote so far this season:

On last weeks games (TU/GMU): "We haven't been playing too badly... We've played as good defensively as we've played all year... Chris Fouch has been on fire for us... Put together complete games."

On the turnaround in the Mason game: "We didnt guard them early... then we forced them to take some shots late in the shot clock and got some easy buckets the other way."

On Chris Fouch coming off the bench: "He's just better for us. He just got that way too. We didn't start winning because he's playing well. We have a good rotation... Gerald and Derrick have done a good job."

On comparing him to Goss: "Fair comparison... Very similar in that they get [the shot] when coming off of screens... I don't know if Phil could dunk."

On [freshman] Kevin Phillip: "I've always felt he's got ability... the thing with him is the mind is a terrible thing to waste... Attitude has been a big difference with him... His focus is better, his attitude is a whole lot better. I think he has the ability to be a good player in our league... His ceiling is really high and I think he has a lot more improving to do, but he's shown glimces that when he puts it together he can be pretty good."

Q: Is the offense any different then shots dropping? "No. We're running the same plays. The big difference has been chris. He takes a lot of pressure off of Jamie. Also Samme, they are doubling him now. Now Jamie doesn't need to get every shot every time down. I think [jamie] wants to play more of a pg position. He's still scoring his points, but he likes to distribute and run the team more better then he likes to score all the time... It's given confidence to the other guys. Gerals has been better... DT isnt shooting better, but he has a better feel for what he's doing out there."

On the HU game: "It's always tough. All the NY guys going up against each other... It goes back to the America East days. When I got here everyone told me Hofstra was the game. That was from the players my first year here."

From Pat Kennedy: "Drexel is playing as well as anyone in the league. I tip my hat to them. Leon Spencer came back but he's coming off the bench. Their guards are playing as well as any set of guards in our league... We showed a tremendous inability to come back."

From Coach L: "I thought we got off to a great start. Then Drexel started to play very well, defending, rebounding, shooting the ball... We made a good run at them..."

From Pecora: "They took it to us down there. I think Drexel is out-toughing people. They are finding ways to win basketball games based on grit...shot selection... the right people doing the right things."

I'll be honest. I think if you give Bru that Pecora quote and some time to himself he would have more fun then he would with a playboy and some time to himself. I mean everying TP mentioned is exactly what Bru screams for all season long.

12 column inches...in your dreams!

I guess it's really just odd to think of Fouch as a reserve when he's scoring so much.

This weeks conference call:

"No showed at Hofstra [beat on all hustle plays] mentally we weren't ready to play... they were."

Fouch update: "Dislocated shoulder... Rehabbing. Whether or not he'll play again depends on whether or not his stregnth comes back... I don't want to say it's even 50/50... Without fouch we won't play as fast or shoot as many 3's because the other guys can't shoot... It effects everybody mentally. Not only was he scoring, he was scoring a lot. We'll play more of a grind out game like we did before he got hot."

On Jamie: "He knows what we need. I think he's an MVP candidate in our conference. From beginning to end he's had the most consistant season in our league. He's played very well on a team that I think most people will say surprised this year. He may have had 2 bad games all year."

On VCU: "I think you have to handle their pressure. We scored in transition when we did break their pressure... When opportunities are there, you need to score."

On the conference: "ODU could be an at large team. If someone besides ODU wins I think we could get 2 teams in the big dance, if not I still think we have a lot of teams [5-6] in the postseason. That's as good as the league has been since I've been here."

Shakalaka Smart: "Jamie Harris doesn't get a lot of publicity... but I don't think he takes a backseat to any point guard in this conference... They shot the ball well against us in Philly and they're tough inside at both ends of the floor. There is quite a bit for our guys to be motivated by."

Give Jamie some love if he beats VCU without Fouch. Beating Delaware at home should be a guarantee every season.
