OT: Who was Pecora's first recruit? Just wondering
Van Macon, when Pecora was an assistant at Nassau Community. Seriously.
Size alone doesn't mean anything. Dane Johnson was even bigger and he was invisible much of the time.
But, it's encouraging that the list on that link shows he drew interest from Mason and three local Big East schools (SJU, SH, and RU). This was also DeMeo's pick, not really Cassara's, though it goes down technically as Cassara's first HU recruit. Besides drawing interest from Pecora, Brown drew interest from Welsh through DeMeo, so I'm sure DeMeo suggested him to Cassara now, and Cassara said sure, go for it.
He doesn't sound like a guy who will use his size to be a big factor, but as long as he can grab some boards and provides a defensive presence in the lane to force opposing teams to stay on the perimeter and shoot jumpers rather than take it to the hole, and if he can do that by playing defense with his feet and staying out of foul trouble, he'll be of value. Beyond that, I wouldn't expect too much, but we never know until they come here are we see how they perform at this level. He at least seems excited to play here.
don't think Dane was ever healthy
Everytime we get someone to accept an invite to play here everyone goes gaga! Other than him playing in an exceptional league-this is a nothing acquistion-especially for next yr! Didn't even start for his HS team and avg 4 pts-geez!
I agree to some extent, but he wants to go to Hofstra, so that's a start. The one thing I will say is some of these big guys are late bloomers. I saw it up in Binghamton with their center Sutton. He did next to nothing in high school, and freshman year he looked spastic. But this season Sutton looked like a totally different player.
Brown looks like a raw player, but a good athlete. I doubt he'll be much of a factor next season, but he could become a player down the line.
After what we've all been through these past two weeks, we need to be optimistic. Hope (and hoops) spring eternal!
