Default New field hockey field next year

Below is a link to an article I read in last week's Chronicle about how the field hockey team will be getting their own field next to the Jets practice facility next season. Hopfully this means it will pave the way for field turf to replace the aging astro turf on the football field. It will also be a positive for field hockey recruiting.

Yup, they are replacing the old soccer field with a field hockey stadium. The turf for here and the new FieldTurf in Shuart is being donated by an alum, so none of it will have to come out of the athletics budget (although it's possible that bleachers and whatnot will be from athletics, I'm not sure). Also, field hockey ofices will be moved to the PFC, ROTC is moving to new offices in the PFC, Sports Info is moving into the ROTC offices, the Athletics Admin. people are moving from the Stadium Building to new offices being constructed in the Mack Complex (aka Arena), Football is taking over the Stadium Building offices, and M and W lax is using all those offices in Margiotta. This will start in Jan and be an ongoing process until everything is settled.

nono, for you younger guys, there is a gated field on the north side of the street that runs alongside the current soccer stadium. There's a scoreboard there and stuff, and a few wood bleachers. That used to be the soccer field (for my freshman and sophomore years, at least, maybe my junior year too, I forget). The current soccer stadium will stay a FieldTurf field, and the FH one will be old school Astroturf (you can only play FH on grass or Astroturf, not Fieldturf).

It's the fenced in area in between the intamural field and the "rugby" field

Used to be called University Field were the soccer teams played before they moved into their new digs in 2004

Team like softball and both men's and women's soccer managed to become fairly big time and definitely successful programs when their respective stadiums were built. Let's hope the same happens in this situation. It should be good for both football and field hockey (I don't know about the preference for lacrosse, although I would think that Astroturf would be easiest for cutting and picking up ground balls).

Astroturf is also higher impact - more injuries, more sore muscles after games. Maybe the field turf will help. If it's harder to pick up ground balls and stuff, both teams have to deal with that and home team would have advantage of being used to it. Seems to me though it would stuff be pretty much the same since the field turf is still flat.

that's good to hear - always like to see upgrade in facilities and they seem to be building a strong program so this should only help
