InsiderHoops is reporting that St. Ray's center/forward Frank Elegar has committed to Drexel. Congrats the big man is good for CAA and the obvious connection to his recrutiment is St Rays alum Chuck Martin.

Thanks for the info. I wish we could've landed Brian Lainge too, but he's off to Seton Hall.

Here's some quotes I found about Frank.

"The light might be coming on for Frank Elegar. The 6-8 Ravens post player was active, scored and rebounded like a guy who wants to play in the A-10 or maybe even higher (?). Stay tuned. …"

"Frank Elgar 6'8" PF/C St. Raymond's HS (Bronx) Agile and bouncy big man who gets better every time you see him. Runs the floor extremely well and has a knack for getting offensive rebounds. Really quick off his feet and that gives him shot blocking potential in help defense situations when he has space to maneuver. His athleticism likely makes him recruitable by mid majors even though his game is still developing. Keep in mind that he will not turn 17 until after the school year begins so there's probably lots of upside. If he can develop a go to move in the post, look out. That plus improved strength are the things he needs to get better."

I wonder if we have any scholarships left. Showers quit the team so that freed up one. On the roster it has Brooks listed as a Junior. I wonder if that is an error or if he got a reshirt for his Freshman year. If that is the case the Whitworth is actually the only senior on the team.

Sounds like this guy has a lot of upside potential. I like the fact he is young and is good getting rebounds. Being young will give him time to develop some post moves and hone his techniques more. I do wish he were a little taller, but our last 6'8" center worked out well for us.

I'd rather have a 6' 8" athletic player than a 7' 0" stiff. At this level that is typically your choice at center. If they are 7' 0" and athletic they'll usually go to a major program.

Elegar was ranked 19th on the HOOPSCOOP New York City Prep Report (Juniors). As a reference point, Brian Laing was ranked 4th. Seems like a solid recruit. He was also looking at Quinnipiac, Iona, Hofstra, Rider, College of Charleston, Long Island and Siena.

"10/16/03 Brooklyn Scout: 'Frank Elegar (pictured), a 6-9 forward at Bronx (NY) St. Raymond's HS, has made a verbal commitment to Drexel. Elegar also received interest from Marist, Canisius and Hofstra. He is the third member of the Ravens to make a D-1 commitment this fall, following Gavin Grant (North Carolina State) and Brian Laing (Seton Hall).'"

Drexel recruit seems to be on upswing
    By BILL FLEISCHMAN
    fleiscb@phillynews.com

After checking last season's statistics of the latest basketball recruit to give Drexel a verbal commitment, it would be easy to wonder why the Dragons are interested in Frank Elegar. He averaged only 6.0 points and 4.0 rebounds.

Let Elegar's coach at St. Raymond's High in the Bronx, N.Y., explain.

"Frank saw limited action," coach Oliver Antigua said yesterday. "But he had an unbelievable summer, impressed a lot of coaches.

"Frank is a versatile big man who runs the floor very well. He'll be great in transition."

The 6-8 Elegar, a senior, won't turn 17 until December.

    ...

Antigua said Elegar and Drexel's previously announced recruit for next season, Randy Hampton, are friends. Hampton is a 6-4 guard for Dunbar High in Washington, D.C.

Maybe this kid could turn out to be a real steal. In addition to Grant (NC State) and Lang (Seton Hall) they also had Louie McCroskey who is now a freshman at Syracuse.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I like the fact that he played with players that are going to big time programs. Hopefully some of that will rub off on him. Even though his numbers aren't that spectacular, I'm glad that we got him now. Seems that now there is a buzz about him.

6 pts and 4 boards? And he's 6'8? And playing HS kids?
