Rumor Has It Towson to the ACC

Towson won the CAA in football last year and will finish in the top 3 this year. It will be interesting to see how Pat Skerry does against Paul Hewitt. I would be surprised if Hewitt does a good job at GM based on what I saw at Tech. Mason could be looking for a new coach in a few years. You had a great one that left for the ACC.

Couldn't the same be true of GSU? I mean, they've been a huge RPI drain for the majority of their time in the CAA. They post one winning season with an RPI in the top 150 with six seniors on the roster (the only year they haven't lost at least 19 games) and all of a sudden they're going to be sorely missed (according to some posters). I know that Ron Hunter looks to be a good coach and will be able to turn around that program, but the jury is still out on him and what he'll be able to do next season and beyond, especially moving down in the Sun Belt.

Skerry so far has been a dynamo recruiter. Yes, it does remain to be seen how well he'll be able to coach these guys up, how much of a motivator he is, and how well he'll be able to get them to buy in to each other, change the culture of losing at Towson. But they definitely will have a stable of horses to work with.

I feel neutral towards GSU, probably because they were in the league for less time and also because they were not bringing national ridicule to the CAA by way of their historically bad record year after year. While they didn't show very well by CAA standards, they did manage to win a few games OOC.

None of those guys were starters. Troy Daniels, Brandon Rozzell, and Jay Gavin were all bench players. Why would we have our starters in then? It was just a ridiculously hot shooting night.

Nobody played more than 22 minutes in that game.

.....except that Towson, Richmond and Villanova do not meet FBS requirements for attendance and/or facilities.

UofR took an almost irrevocable step when it built it's new stadium (8700) and vacated the larger City Stadium.

Father Peter Donahue has made it pretty clear that there is no FBS upgrade in Villanova's immediate future, and attendance at 'Nova has been going down; it has averaged only 7000-8000 per home game the last few years.

Towson averaged between 9000 - 10000 last year. That's over 5000 short of FBS reqirements.

While it true that NCAA rules say 15K (rolling 2 year period) I also heard the NCAA may not be willing to enforce the guidelines.

I.E., UMASS? They haven't met the 15K fan rule yet but they're going to the MAC,

Also seems to be many schools falling below the 15K guideline, or report numbers just above the guideline raises suspicions that some schools may inflate attendance to stay above 15K.

I don't recall schools ever being demoted? I could be wrong..... And makes me wonder if over 15K fans have really been attending Duke home games??

Many schools in the MAC and some of the Sunbelt may be in trouble if that were the case.

Towson may not be ready, but seems to be moving in the FBS direction. I have to agree that Villanova & Richmond appear to be comfortable with playing at the FCS level for some time to come.

There could be other schools that could be pulled in if all were on the same page. I.E., UMASS with their 10K fans per game probably has not real attachment to the MAC. Buffalo may be interested in an East Coast WAC if it held promise of a better financial deal than the MAC. YSU would be another possibility.

I wouldnt want to move up without U Del and a couple others in tow. I enjoy the UD game every year. Also we are a long way from 15k, our capacity is a couple thousand off.

Be that as it may; I am quite sure that the NCAA would NOT allow Towson to move up with a stadium that has less than a 15000 capacity.

While I am certainly not a fan of us moving up. We are at 12K now, how hard would 3K in temporary bleachers be to accomplish while phase three expansion fills in 6-7K in the closed end?

Nobody from the CAA is moving anywhere for quite some time...that million dollar penalty (along with the NCAA basketball money) ratified by the presidents has pulled the plug on any movers. The CAA is in the process now of adding teams, not subtracting.

True. With 2-3 more years of winning, I see Towson easily following the below plan.

We do seat 12k now with standing room only.
