OT - Our New University President

I spoke with a neighbor who is a tenured professor in the College of Science at my kids swim team pep rally last night. He said the new President has been meeting with all of the faculty and staff in each of the Colleges at the University in advance of him formally taking the chair in July.

My neighbor was VERY impressed with the new President - his understanding of how business schools and schools of science and engineering work - the trends driving innovation in University level education and his vision for our University. He stated that his vision is VERY aggressive for Mason in terms of its position as an academic institution in the Commonwealth and the nation. He vision is basically to make Mason "THE" University in VA.

He has impressed a lot of the faculty and is getting buy-in on his agenda going forward.

I am looking forward to the new era at Mason.

You guys can give him grief if you want. However, the fact he is meeting with each individual school to sit with them personally and go over the plans and vision is very proactive. I like this. I have heard from two people - one professor and one large donor - that he is sharp and - again - Aggressive.

Well that's great, but it's also a bit like praising the maid for vacuuming its kind of his job.

If they'd hired the Unabomber you'd have a thread on his Harvard credentials, clear communication style, and that it was a great fit with the regions focus on exploding growth in the tech sector.

Ok OK look I agree this is his job. However, there are so many University Presidents that DON'T do their job it is a good sign that our new guy is not wasting time.

And my comments about making the University do well academically was more explicit in his talks - he wants to challenge the established order in the Commonwealth of VA. A bit more than saying he wants to "do well" academically.
