Nobody has mentioned that last night was the occasion of the annual W&M Football Reunion Dinner, with about 250
former players, coaches and officials packing the floor of Kaplan Arena
Featured speaker, coming after remarks by President Reveley and Laycock, was Lou Holtz. Holtz captivated the
audience, which included reunion tables of his own players at W&M as well as the 1986 squad, with 25-minute
speech which was both very funny and serious. Holtz included personal comments on his days at W&M, both his three years as an assistant coach and three years as head coach. He, interestingly, noted that when he was head coach
the W&M president, Davis Paschall was committed to joining the ACC with Holtz his coach and was on the cusp of this when South Carolina left the ACC, but that Dr.Paschall became ill and the succeeding administration decided to go another way. Holtz also singled out one of his former players attending the dinner, Dan Henning, a longtime NFL assistant and head coach, as one of the finest football minds he's seen in all his years of coaching. Holtz also saluted Jimmye and the Tribe program as second to none.
Reveley showed his support for the football program, pointing out that Tribe football is a uniter among alumni and that the home games take on an importance as events the bind the College, town and area together as no other. He also
elicited some cheers when he pointed out the great success of Tribe teams in years that end with the number, two.
So he has great hopes for this season.
There were lots of great stories told at the cocktail party and dinner. On current matters, there was lots of talk about the qb battle, with the predominant feeling that nothing had been settled this past spring and that it was wide open at to at least three of the contestants, with some noting that Oritz had the best quarterbacking skills, including arm strength, of any of them. If he can demonstrate the kind of knowledge of Jimmye's offensive schemes required he could be our qb.
Also some very positive talk about the new transfer, with one assistant Tribe coach citing him as a potential All-everything defensive back with big-time skills, including speed and hitting power.
