Duke and Carolina represent two of the top four basketball schools in the history of the NCAA. They have won four of the last 12 NCAA Championships. Duke has more Championships than any other school since 1990 with four, and Carolina and Kentucky are the only other schools with three Championships since 1990.

So, their rivalry is recognized on a national level because they are without question two of the best basketball schools in the country. And it leaps to another level because not only are they in the same conference, but they are 24 minutes away from each other. No other rivalry of that level shares a proximity where the competing athletes and students go to the same bars and drive the same streets.
    Just wait until NEXT year....

Best rivalry discussions are so stupid. The best rivalry is the one that involves the team you cheer for. The rest are all pretty insignificant in comparison and have little more than regional relevance.

edit: the sole exception might be the Army/Navy football game.

All that stuff you mentioned makes it likely that if UNC does decide to bolt the rivalry will still thrive. UNC has no obligation to Duke in the way some claim they do with NCst or UVA does with Tech. Duke is a private school, thus there will be no political hang ups. Also you mentioned earlier about UNC academic scandal and needing Duke to help that perception, well I cant think of a better way to improve their image than by joining the BIG10 where 13 of its members are AAU members as well. But I doubt that will happen, the ACC is safe and this is UNCs home. The people who keep claiming that the ACC is on the verge of collapse are probably people with an inferiorty complex who have to deal with ACC fans superiorty complex and are hoping they have the last laugh at their instate rivals, but if the ACC were to collapse it would really only people the small private schools that would be left out of the shuffle.
