Ah, give T-mac, the widely renowned originator of the now infamous home court disadvantage theory, as well as he who would ponder the riches of an undefeated ODUH bball season a few years ago, a break.

He's only been an Ole dirty fan for those 4-5 months as he had been expending his boundless energies being FHF. Busy swapping out the turkey feet stickers for the doormat sized VT logo on the old rig every other day to make double-dog darn sure everyone knows he's a dedicated Chokie. Oh, that and quietly still wiping those tears every time he hears or sees 21-16. It's okay FHF, really, there, it's okay.

"The Monarchs can have the FBS maximum of 85 players on scholarship, 22 more than FCS schools. But the NCAA stipulates that ODU will count as an FCS win or loss to every opponent it plays. The rule, in essence, is a penalty the NCAA levies to discourage schools from moving up to FBS."
thank you mturn for helping to clear this up. odu, fcs independent 85 scholarships and playoff ineligible in 2013. if you don't get it, there's just no hope for you.

I believe we can have up to 85 schollies but probably won't until 2014. There's been rumors about us receiving a waiver from the NCAA to go straight to FBS which I would assume would be on account of our scheduling woes. UTSA I think received a similar waiver but they were entering the WAC, I'm not sure that our troubles finding someone to play will be considered as dire as that. It would be good for us though b/c then we could get into the C-USA conference schedule and only have to find a few OOC games. But just rumors for now.

i thought selig chose to wait until 2015 to be full-time in the CUSA because he didn't want to rush it more than it already is? i thought CUSA wanted full-time by 2014 but Selig talked them into pushing it back another year to make the 2012 team playoff eligible?

That's my general understanding also. And this is probably no more than internet rumors. I searched on the internet it seems the WAC and UTSA were planning on applying for a waiver to have them count as FBS early and they are considered WAC members this year but I didn't see anywhere that said waiver was actually granted.

If ODU could receive a waiver it would basically be the best of both worlds: we win a NC this year and not have to travel the continent to get a full schedule next year (only as far as Texas). The only difference being we would be playing a few more FBS teams and a few less FCS teams next year but after seeing some of the competition this past weekend we'd probably fare OK.

disclaimer: I may be full of sh*t The finer points of the transition honestly confuse me and I don't have the time to research just now. If anyone knows more on this or think they do please let me know.
