Martin actually is of Cuban ancestry. He really wanted the Miami job last year too. They didn't want him.

Given Martin's reputation (angry, and kind of shady in some recruiting practices - Beasley case), and given Miami's probing going around that time (snitch guy saying he paid players, and that the AD knew about it), Miami went after the safe choice. White, nonthreatening, old guy with a pretty good reputation in terms of program cleanliness.

Any other year they would be all over Frank Martin's junk.
