Sharing the wealth?
Following George Mason's remarkable march to the 2006 Final Four, veteran CAA commissioner Tom Yeager implemented an excellence pool. The league's athletic directors were in full support, according to Hofstra's Jack Hayes, who served on the committee that created the formula. Their goal was to create financial incentive for the league's programs to invest any money received from the NCAA Tournament pool back into their basketball programs. And because Mason generated a windfall, the timing was perfect.
Five years later, the commissioner is pleased with the plan.
“The results speak for themselves,” Yeager said recently. “This is the first step.”
