Since 1961, the John Wanamaker Athletic Award has been presented annually to the athlete, team or organization that has done the most to reflect credit upon Philadelphia and to the team or sport in which they excel. Past winners include Chuck Bednarik, Julius Erving, Bernie Parent and Mike Schmidt, among others. Drexel's Men's Basketball team won the award in 1996.

"Members from the Ivy League include Brown University, Cornell University, Columbia University, Harvard University, Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania. American University, Leigh University, Bucknell University, the United States Military Academy at West Pont and the United States Naval Academy are all affiliated with the Patriot League.
