TIGERS vs. JOHNS HOPKINS:
The Tigers and Blue Jays are meeting for the 31st time, the second this season and the third time as NCAA Tournament opponents. JHU leads the overall series 27-3 and has won both previous tourney games between the two schools, dispatching the Tigers 15-8 in the 1992 quarterfinals and 22-16 in a 1994 first round game. All three of Towson’s wins in this series have been clifflhangers and one-goal victories in the regular season. The 27 wins are the most by any opponent over Towson.
NCAA HISTORY:
This is Towson’s 7th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Their place in this year’s event was earned through TU’s Colonial Athletic Association title which carries with it an automatic bid. Towson is the only school with an automatic still competing in the 2003 tournament. It is the second time Towson has used an automatic qualifier, having won the AMERICA EAST championship in 2001. Its other 5 berths were at-large invitations. The Tigers have an all-time tourney record of 7-6. They are 4-2 in first round games. This is only the third NCAA tournament game played by the Tigers at home. They lost 15-8 to a 1992 Johns Hopkins team coached by current Tiger coach TONY SEAMAN. This past Saturday the Tigers beat Penn State 11-6. So while the Tigers are 1-1 at home in NCAA post-season games, their coach is 2-0 in Towson Stadium. Johns Hopkins is making its 32nd appearance in the NCAA’s. The Blue Jays own 7 NCAA titles, 29 USILA titles and 6 ILA titles for a total of 42 national championships. This is the 9th time the Blue Jays have been seeded number one. They have never failed to make it through the quarterfinals as the top seed.
IN THE LAST MEETING:
Towson and Johns Hopkins last tangled 3 weeks ago when the Tigers dropped their regular season finale 17-9 to the Blue Jays. The Tigers had taken a 9-6 lead over the Blue Jays with 11:08 left in the third quarter before Hopkins shut out the Tigers for the remaining 26:08 of the game while mounting an 11-0 run (the longest run ever against Towson in its recorded history) to win 17-9. The 17 goals were the most allowed by Towson thus far in 2003. Nine different players scored a goal to account for the Tigers’ 9 goals. KEVIN BOLAND paced all scorers with 4 goals while BOBBY BENSON and ADAM DONEGER tallied 3 each. CONOR FORD chipped in with 5 assists.
MOST RECENTLY:
Towson poured it on early, sprinting to a 10-2 halftime lead and then held off a Penn State rally to finally beat the Nittany Lions 11-6 in last Saturday night’s first round game. The Tigers went scoreless for the final 28:31 of the game but built a comfortable enough lead, helped by TODD SPEAR’s 3 goals, to keep the advantage. Top-seeded Johns Hopkins, meanwhile, got 3 goals from Bobby Benson, Joe McDermott and Kyle Barrie and Kevin Boland had one goal and a career-high 5 assists as the Blue Jays knocked off visiting Army, 14-2 in another first rounder. It was, Hopkins' 9th straight win overall and the 19th straight at Homewood Field.
