Would any of you have any interest in joining the Big East Alliance as reported today in the Boston Globe. The article stated that Hofstra was one of the schools that would join the basketball only schools in forming a hoops alliance. I think the choice would be clear to me......let me see....Villanova, Georgetown, St. John's......or UNCW, Drexel and Towson.

Why wouldn't we? Better geographic fit, and revenue, etc. But remember, forget about the Tourney for at least 5 years...but you would almost have to give the recruiting edge to Hofstra over St. Johns based on campus, academics, and facilities.

To think Hofstra would ever have a recruiting edge over St Johns... is hysterical...

So much so I dont even have much more to say about the topic.

If Hofstra was in the same conference as St. Johns...there is a lot to talk about in terms of advantages.

Would you rather get a glorified HS diploma at St. Johns, or a degree from Hofstra? Would you rather go to school in Jamaica, Queens or at a school that is a National Arboritum? Would you rather play the majority of your games at Alumni Hall (another glorified HS facility) or Hofstra Arena?

Right now, you're correct...The Big East over the CAA..no brainer. But if Hofstra were to be in the Big East...I bet in a few years, we'd be in recruiting wars.

That would be the bomb if Hofstra could be in the Big East for hoops! Even if we struggled our first couple years we'd still get a lot of nationalexposure and it would be a ten times better geographic fit.

For those who want to read it, the article is online, here. (http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/130/sports/Gavitt_hopes_to_be_part_of_solution+.shtml)

Guys I dont see it happening. St Johns would never let it happen. This has been brought up in the past. St Johns as a founding member has the right to veto our petition for application into the league. St Johns does not want us in for many reasons. Geography- too close, Facilities- we would blow them away. A sububan school as opposed to a urban school. Basketball, soocor and baseball is all St Johns has over us now. All other sports there is no contest. St Johns will draw well from the inner city but those that want to escape to a more open a better looking campus, Hofstra has the edge.

Although I would absolutely LOVE to see that happen, I just don't think it will - i'll believe it when i see it

I'd much rather see us get our asses kicked in the Big East than the CAA - at least then it's somewhat justified!

We would struggle for a few yrs, but it would be cool to play those teams yr in and yr out - some big time home games! With our location I think we could be successful - our recruiting would skyrocket

But in no way do i think Pecora's a Big East-caliber coach - he hasn't even proved he's a CAA-caliber coach yet - shown us nothing so far - we'd prob need to a new coach/staff to go along w/new players

The Bottom Line

conference home games.... hofstra arena or MSG? come on, guys. they're basketball players, they don't give a rats @ss about the arboretum. i hardly think a kid like marcus hatten would make that part of his decision.

i think it would be great for the DUTCH to get into a conference like that; if you're going to get in over your head in the short term, that's the way to go. eventually, you could picture them getting up to speed. big east vs. caa is a no-brainer.

Doesn't sound like it is anything that will come to fruition, since it's being talked about by someone who hasn't had power in quite a number of years. It would be like like Gerald Ford commenting on how George W. should do X.

btw, I have heard rumors in the past (don't know how accurate they are) that Hofstra was approached to join the Big East when it was first founded in the late 70's, having come off back-to-back ECC championships and NCAA tournament appearances, but we rejected them because it looked like a league of mostly small, Catholic schools, and the ECC was still a powerful conference then.

If that rumor is true then that wouldbe one of the dumbest mistakes in sports history. What a missed oppurtunity by Hofstra to go big time if that is true so I hope it's not.

That article is strictly an "opinion" by the writer. I have a hard time believing Hofstra is being discussed as a future Big East member by anyone.

Seems pretty clear that if/when anything happens what you are going to see is a 10-team hoops league of the following :

St John's
Providence
Georgetown
Seton Hall
Villanova
Notre Dame
Xavier
Dayton
Depaul
Marquette

Not a bad hoops league.

UMass, URI, St Louis and a number of others would get offers to join before Hofstra, IMO.

I've heard the same rumor. But Joe and I know a lot of the same people so we could have both heard it that way...

Just heard on Sportscenter that the ACC is going to offer membership to three Big East teams (three of - Miami, Syracuse, Boston College and Virginia Tech).

I wish the CAA and the America East would have merged.
