ODU hosts a game in the CBI and we don't get on "their board"? Please. Shoot me. I am through with college basketball.

It was FREE for ODU. 2 Free games for ODU... a chance to play a state rival!!!

While the University of Virginia estimates its participation in the College Basketball Invitational could cost at least $150,000, Old Dominion's role as host of a first-round game didn't cost the Monarchs anything.........

ODU men's basketball coach Blaine Taylor declined to comment on the financial aspects of his squad's participation in the tournament.

"I really think there is a place for the CBI. We loved being in postseason play and felt we put our best foot forward," Taylor said. "All we did was try to help a new tournament get off the ground and do what we could."

"In the process, we also did what was right for our program."

"I can see where some institutions might have sour grapes if they didn't cut a better deal than what was offered, which is what it seems ODU did," said Dan Hauser, assistant athletic director of Ohio University, which paid the $60,000 fee for hosting a first-round game against Brown.

bigblue, you've been posting this EVERYWHERE on CAAZone, even when it was completely unnecesarry to do so (such as in this thread, where there was no mention of how much the CBI cost or didn't cost). We get it.

I posted it under a "HOW?" thread that talked about the cost of the tournament and ODU wasting there money.... I looked for it today and didn't see it. There was alot griping on our boards regarding how it was a waste of money (ODU/VCU boards).... just trying to get the latest info out there.

We get it...but for the record you guys are now sitting in the same position we are and we've moved on to baseball since no CAA school is playing basketball anymore.

You might also want to do some research before you start talking about how ODU played in 2 more games "for free." You still had to pay half the gate for the home game...and it appears that was $7000. Which means ODU made $7000 off the gate in their 1 home game. My guess is it cost more than $7000 to operate the Ted for that one game, had to pay the bills needed for the team to practice for the extra 10 days, and had to pay the travel expenses that weren't paid by the CBI for ODU to travel to UVA.

Congrats on making the CBI, congrats on the ODU admin working out the deal to not have to pay $60,000, but it's over, you're no longer playing, and we don't care!

I don't know what makes the CBI look worse? Allowing an undeserving team to pay 60K to play another game or waiving said fee to said undeserving team out of desperation to find teams at the last minute? The CBI has lost all credibility now.....and I'm sure the other teams who paid the 60K are thrilled to find this out.

Raleighawk, if the CBI has no credibility, then why are UNCW fans so bent out of shape about not being included?

Apparently you don't read other posts. It's more that we wanted 1 more opportunity to see our seniors play.

The CBI has no credibility because it has no credible, concrete standards for making the CBI. If they did-then ODU would have never played in the tourny. First they charged some teams 60k to play and then to complete the field at the last minute...they had to drop the 60k fee. Any tourny that has to 'beg' undeserving teams to play at the last second in order to complete a 16 team field.... has no credibility whatsoever.

And I don't want to hear any more bull**** excuses about ODU's bigger and better facilities...especially when only 2000 people showed up. Trask would have tripled those attendance numbers with the same amount of "promotion time", despite having 2000 fewer seats.

Raleighawk, I wish for your sake there was a way for you to prove that UNCW would have tripled ODU's attendance numbers with less than 36 hrs notice. Unfortunately, the CBI simply didn't want you, so there's no way to tell whether you're full of sh!t or not.

You don't think we could top 2000 fans? We can get that many students alone. Our spring break was over. And it doesn't take much incentives to get students to show up at Trask. 8)

This is the problem with the CBI this year, and from what I heard our beloved Commish say, was his fear all along and the same with most in the NCAAs. I would like to think that some of the issues could be fixed if they continue to run this event, however I think it's doubtful, mainly because the company that runs it, along with Fox are simply out there trying to make money. So, the best teams available will not make the event and as a fan of college basketball i think the postseason should be reserved for teams that have earned the right to play after the season is over. If they the companies that are trying to make a buck wanted to do this at the beginning of the season and teams wanted to join then I'd have no problem with it. As it stands now, I take issue.

Masonfan, none of the postseason tournaments go after strictly the best teams available. The NCAA and NIT go after major conference teams first, and mid-majors second. All three tournaments are interested in making money first, and providing high quality basketball games second.

you are wrong. both the NIT and NCAA go after the auto-bids first, then it's filled mostly with worthy teams, sure there are questions, and sure they all want to make money, but it's certainly not nearly as bad as the CBI.
