COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Game #1: Towson 2, Delaware 1 (8 innings)
Game #2:
NEWARK, Del. - Sophomore righthander JESSICA WIDES pitched a five-hitter in a 2-1, eight-inning first game win as Towson University (27-19-1, 8-6) split a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader with the University of Delaware (19-19-1, 7-7) at Delaware Field on Saturday afternoon. Freshman pitcher LINDSAY JONES fired a four-hit shutout in
the nightcap as Delaware won the second game, 4-0.
The doubleheader split, coupled with James Madison losing twice to George
Mason at home on Saturday, 6-5 and 6-4, enabled Towson and Delaware to clinch spots in the
Colonial Athletic Association Softball Tournament next weekend. The
tournament will be played Thursday through Saturday, May 8-10, on the
Hofstra University campus in Hempstead, N.Y. Towson and Delaware will
join top-seeded Hofstra and George Mason in the four-team field. The second, third and fourth seeds will be determined by the outcome of tomorrow’s games.
In the opener, Towson took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI
single by senior second baseman CHRIS NAVARRO. Delaware tied the game when LIZ WINSLOW hit her
first home run of the season, a solo shot to right field, in the fourth inning.
The score remained tied until the eighth when Towson took advantage of
two Delaware miscues. With two outs, freshman JILL FRASER reached on an error.
Navarro followed with a bloop behind first base that fell in between two
fielders. The ball bounced away as Fraser raced around and scored all
the way from first on the play to give Towson the lead.
Wides allowed just five hits while walking three and striking out five batters. She is now 13-8 on the season. Navarro led the Tigers as she accounted for three of Towson's four hits.
Jones allowed four hits and one walk while striking out three as the Blue Hens clinched a spot in the conference tournament for the eighth straight season. Jones is now 7-5
on the season with 61 strikeouts and just seven walks in 91-1/3 innings
of work.
After stranding seven runners in the first four innings and having just
one run to show for it, Delaware gave Jones some breathing room in the
fifth. JENNY GILKINS led off with a hit to left center that went
to the wall for a triple. LAURA STREETS, MELISSA BASILIO and Winslow followed with three consecutive doubles to extend the Delaware lead to 4-0 and chase Towson starting pitcher BETH WILCOX, now 10-11.
Jones got into a little bit of trouble in the top of the sixth when the
Tigers got runners at second and third with one out. However, a pair of
groundouts got Jones out of trouble. In the seventh, Towson also had
runners at first and third before Jones recorded a strikeout and the
final out on a pop-up.
The two teams will complete their three-game series on Sunday with a
single game beginning at 12 noon. Towson can clinch the number two seed in the tournament with a win over the Blue Hens.

COSTELLO HOMERS TWICE IN TIGERS’ 10-5 WIN OVER DREXEL
Towson, Md. - Junior first baseman Mike Costello (Archbishop Curley H.S./Baltimore, Md.) had four hits for the second game in a row and drove in three runs as Towson University (24-22, 8-8) moved closer to securing a Colonial Athletic Association Tournament berth with a 10-5 CAA win over Drexel University (10-30, 2-14) at Schuerholz Park on Saturday afternoon.
The win was the Tigers’ fifth in their last six games and marked the 399th career victory for Coach Mike Gottlieb. In his 16th season as the Tigers’ coach, Gottlieb will try to win his 400th career game in the series finale on Sunday.
Costello, who was four-for-four against Drexel on Friday, went four-for-five with two homers in Saturday’s game. In the two games against Drexel, he is 8-for-9 with six runs scored, three home runs and six runs batted in.
The win enabled Towson to maintain its two-game lead over Old Dominion and their three-game lead over Delaware in their battle for the sixth and final spot in the CAA Tournament, scheduled for May 20-24.
Senior third baseman Tom Trela (St. Paul’s H.S./Baldwin, Md.) also had a big game for the Tigers as he went three-for-three with two runs scored and three RBI’s.
Freshman righthander Stephen Merson (Atholton H.S./Laurel, Md.) earned the win for the Tigers, upping his record to 4-2 on the year. He pitched the first 6.2 innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits. Junior righthander Jason Summerlin (Owings Mills H.S./Reisterstown, Md.) nailed down the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
In the second inning, the Tigers rallied for five runs to take a 5-0 lead. With two runners on base, Trela tripled to right center field to give Towson a 2-0 lead. Junior Bobby Paduano (St. Anthony’s H.S./Huntington, N.Y.) singled him home to put the Tigers ahead, 3-0. Costello capped off the rally with his first home run of the game, a two-run shot to left field.
The Dragons came back in the third inning to score twice. Junior third baseman John Wieckowski (Moosic, Pa.) led off the inning with a single. With two outs, junior center fielder Josh Brandt (Papillion, Neb.) hit a two-run homer to left field, his fourth homer of the season, cutting the lead to 5-2.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Trela and Paduano led off with back-to-back singles. A sacrifice fly by sophomore second baseman Shane Justis (Bel Air H.S./Bel Air, Md.) drove in Trela to make it a 6-2 lead. After Costello doubled, junior shortstop Brian McKenna (Watkins Mill H.S./Germantown, Md.) walked to load the bases. A two-run single by sophomore Mark Chiccini (Pottsville Area H.S./St. Clair, Pa.) stretched the lead to 8-2.
In the fifth inning, junior catcher Jeremy Stifler (North Harford H.S./Jarrettsville, Md.) led off with a single and stole second base. Trela’s double to left center field scored Stifler and gave Towson a 9-2 lead.
The Dragons rallied in the seventh inning when sophomore Luke Sundheim (Glencoe, Ill.) led off with a single to center field. He advanced to third base on a single by Wieckowski. Junior Kyle Martin (Freeport, Ill.) hit a potential double play ground ball to McKenna. After Wieckowski was retired at second base, a throwing error by Justis allowed Sundheim to score, making it a 9-3 lead. A triple to right center field by junior second baseman Jeff Lamb (Fort Madison, Iowa) made it a 9-4 lead. When Brandt singled to center field, Lamb scored to make it a 9-5 game. At that point, Summerlin came in from the bullpen to relieve Merson. He ended the threat by striking out junior designated hitter Josh Yocum (Sinking Spring, Pa.).
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Costello led off and hit his 13th home run of the season to give the Tigers a 10-5 lead.
Costello, who is now batting .358, led the Tigers’ 17-hit attack with four hits while McKenna and Trela had three hits each.
Wieckowski led Drexel by going three-for-four.
Assistant Coach Liam Healy coached the Tigers to Saturday’s win because Gottlieb was serving a one-game suspension for being ejected from the first game of the series on Friday, an 11-1 Towson win.
The Tigers and the Dragons play the final game of their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00.
