Johan Gunterberg from Stockholm, Sweden. He plays for a club team over there called Lidingo Basket

6'4 guard who can shoot the 3 from the international line and w/ the 3 pt. line moving back this year, it looks like Bill Coen wants to bring in a kid who could be a zone breaker. European players usually play matador defense, but Gunterberg probably brings instant offense off of the bench.

BTW, this kid makes Matt Janning look like he's 50 years old!

How good is this kid supposed to be?
Is he an immediate impact player?

Don't know, but at 6-4 and the fact that he plays the shooting guard position in international ball makes me believe that he'll have an eventual impact once he gets comfortable here.

I have the utmost confidence in Bill Coen's ability to evaluate talent. His track record speaks for itself. This kid must have the ability put the ball in the basket. He's not going to start if that's what you're asking.

That's really all I have on him.

He's an incoming recruit for this upcoming season. Looks like he wants to study International Business at NU according to one article.

However, unless you know Swedish, all articles on him are in that language ...

If I hear more on him I'll pass it along or drop NU Hoop Fan an PM.

Thanks.

I have more on Gunterberg ...

I emailed a Swedish columnist who coached and covered Gunterberg. He had written an article that I saw and he had his email address. So I sent a note last week and he replied today.

Hi,

I've seen Johan play since he was 13 years old, I've even coached against his team for several years. He was coached by his father who was on the Swedish Olympic Team in 1980. So he's been in a basketball gym pretty much since he could walk. There is no question about he shooting abilities. It's his forté and will always be. He learned how to score since he has been the first scoring option on every team he has been on.

He hasn't been able to clinch a permanent spot on the Swedish Junior National Team since he isn't a pure point guard and a little bit to slow to defend shooting guards. He is a fierce competitor and will do everything in his power to win but still struggles in defense and passing. But I am sure that he will be able to develop those parts of his game at Northeastern and that he will be a big asset to your team. He never gives up, is a hard worker and very dedicated to the game.

It makes me happy to hear that Northeastern has a good academic program. I believe in your student-athlete system and can only wish the things were the same in Europe.

Best regards,

Johannes Wohlert

Johannes,

How are you?

I'm a fan and alum from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts U.S.A.

Johan Gunterberg is coming to play basketball for us. I was wondering if you can tell me a little bit about his basketball skills. What are his strengths and weaknesses.

I'm assuming he's a very good shooter, but probably will struggle defensively in college basketball at the beginning.

Our Head Coach Bill Coen is very good and is a great teacher. He knows how to run a program and evaluate talent.

Johan will also enjoy Northeastern's academics and the campus and city of Boston are excellent for students!

Thank you and if you want to know more about Northeastern please let me know!
