Since we're the only CAA school with hockey, I figure some of the other school's hockey fans can jump on our bandwagon! After a tough season last year (with ties and 1-goal losses galor) NU is looking to come back and surprise a lot of people. Another solid recruiting class to follow up last season, and the possible return of 1st round draft pick Mike Morris are things to be excited for.

Lastly, I know a few CAA posters showed interest in NU's jerseys last season. The red game worns are for sale:
Jerseys for sale
Northeastern's game-worn red jerseys from the 2005-06 season are on sale for $125 each. Due to NCAA rules, names will be removed from the jerseys. Call equipment Manager Matt Nareski at (617) 373-7934 or e-mail m.nareski@neu.edu for information about purchasing jerseys. The Huskies will wear new red jerseys for the upcoming season.

Perhaps we should clarify that photo, huskies_radio. Y'know, for the uninitiated...
Since the start of the Beanpot tournament in 1952, Northeastern had won the heralded intra-city showdown a total of ZERO times and was in jeopardy of being removed from the tournament until 1980.
That year, despite winning 7 games all season, the Huskies defeated Boston University (cptained by Mike Eruzione) in the first round to advance to the finals against Boston College. There, forward Wayne Turner (owner of the baddest afro in NU history) scored the tournament-winner in overtime against Boston College to win the university's first Beanpot by a score of 5-4. It's not only considered the greatest athletic moment in Northeastern history; it is also considered one of the high points in Boston sports history. It ranked 9th in the greatest Boston sports moments of the 1980s by Bob Lobel and solidified the Beanpot as the premeir event in college hockey outside of the Frozen Four. the Huskies went on to win four Beanpots in the 1980s, the most of any school in the tournament that decade.
Needless to say, Wayne "Beanpot" Turner will never need to buy another drink at Punter;s Pub for the rest of his life.
And that's why the above image means so much to Northeastern University.

Historical clarification, Doc.
Eruzione wasn't the captain of the 1980 BU hockey team.
He graduated from BU by then (he graduated in 1976 or 1977) and was playing in some tournament in Lake Placid, New York in February of 1980.
NU detractors will note that of the 4 times NU won the Beanpot (1980, 1984, 1985, 1988), three were Olympic years when the better players from Havard, BU, and BC were competing for Olympic medals and the "talent" at the Beanpot was slightly diluted.
Since pros have been allowed to compete in the Olympics (1992), NU hasn't won a Beanpot. I say it's a historical anomaly, but the other 'Pot schools love to point that out.
That being said, as terrible as we've been in Hockey, the first night of the Beanpot is as electric in Boston as the first round of the NCAA Hoop Tournament. Everything else becomes secondary, bars are packed starting at 4 pm, and the Garden is the center of attention.
It's such a big tournament that during the Blizzard of 1978, a bunch of people were stranded in the Garden during the snowstorm as it fell during the Beanpot.

... and it happened to fall on my 8th birthday that wiped out my 3rd grade b-day party at school!

I was fortunate to go to a game last year. As it happened, it was the first Pats playoff game, so the crowd was non-existant. But it was still good for my first DI hockey experience (second NCAA game). It was weird seeing a Hofstra banner at a hockey rink. Kinda made me wish...

Since we're the only CAA school with hockey...
Towson has an ice hockey team also. However, we are in the ECHA, where it looks like you guys are in that upper tier group of college teams if you're playing Michigan and Maine.. Our regular opponents incl Navy, Penn St, Lehigh, Rhode Is, W Virginia, and Maryland..

main difference is that HEA is a NCAA league, its an offical D1 sport at NU where as at Towson is club as far as I can tell

I think you hit on it. I know our games just switched to free admission, & I don't think they're linked to our other NCAA sports... BTW, awesum arena you guys have there!!

it is a club team, not to say that its bad though. I grew up in DC and remember going to many Towson (State, I'm old school haha) vs UMD games, always a good time. I also worked with Sandor, the guy who does play by play for Towson hockey.

Because hockey is a pretty big sport, but not many schools have it, Club hockey is among the most competitive sports out there. Some of the top club teams could beat lower tier D1 teams. Penn State, Kentucky, and I think Syracuse are all pretty good.
There are always rumors that the better club teams might switch to varsity, but no program has wanted to invest the money in a long while.
Anyways, in my original post I should have said D1 hockey ;)
NU plays in Hockey East, which I would compare to ACC football. The top teams are the best in the nation, the middle teams are above average, and Merrimack is like Duke.

Indeed, Penn State hockey is legit, I went to their camps for a few years and talked to the coach there. The only thing holding them back from D1 is Title IX, the school has to add another womens sport to do it, someday it will happen. Penn State has a great on campus facility and sell our regualrly (the arena has a weird yellow lighting though...its indeed strange) and the camp is held through the school. Its about as offical there as you can be with out being, well offical.

Merrimack is like Duke? What are we then?????
Who battles Duke for the ACC cellar in football? Because we're THAT team.
That "Sweet Arena" we play hockey in is also our basketball arena. Based on the picture, it looks like we're playing Boston College, that's why the place is packed.
Arizona also has a kick arse club hockey team, believe it or not.

We've had a bad string in hockey, sure, but when i was in school, which wasnt long ago, we were a pretty solid team.
Oh, and Merrimack is Duke, because unlike us they dont win out of conference games. We get killed in conference, but hold our own against the cupcakes.

Season starts Tuesday against #1 BC. Hopefully NU can surprise Hockey East early and often!
