Both of Coach L's championship teams (1998-99 & 2000-01) had 2 common traits: effectiveness of the "Scramble" defense in forcing turnovers & clutch 3-pt. shooting. The highest & 4th highest number of steals in school history occurred during those seasons: 304 & 252 in 1998-99 & 2000-01, respectively. In each of those seasons, the Patriots had 4 players in the top 10 in the CAA in steals per game during the regular season:
1998-99
#2 George Evans (2.35 pg)
#4 Jason Miskiri (2.00 pg)
#6 Erik Herring (1.50 pg)
#10 Ahmad Dorsett (1.35 pg)
2000-01
#1 George Evans (1.96 pg)
#2 Jon Larranaga (1.74 pg)
#7 Tremaine Price (1.22 pg)
#10 (tied) Erik Herring (1.19 pg)
In each of those seasons, the Patriots had multiple players who were effective 3-pt. shooters. But, the best clutch 3-pt. shooter was Erik Herring who ranked the following in the CAA in 3-pt. FG% during those regular seasons:
1998-99
#1 - 46.5%
2000-01
#3 - 41.7%
IMO, the 2003-04 team has the talent to duplicate the traits of those championship seasons. Hopefully, it will perform up to those expectations.
