Through six events of the 2002-03 Colonial Athletic Association Track and Field Championships, the College of William & Mary stands in first place in both the women’s and men’s standings after six events in the opening day of competition at Richmond Sports Backers Stadium.
The William & Mary men scored 87 points on day one and lead second place Delaware with 50 points. UNC Wilmington is in third with 29 points, followed by Towson with 26, Virginia Commonwealth with 14, James Madison with 14, and George Mason with eight. The Tribe women have 60 points after six events followed by UNC Wilmington with 46.5, James Madison with 37, George Mason with 35, Towson with 24, Delaware with 17.5, and Virginia Commonwealth with 14.
On the men’s side, the Tribe captured three first place finishes. Junior Jacob Frey won the 5,000-meter run in 14:32.7. Sophomore Andy Smith won the javelin with a toss of 57.88 meters. Senior West Garrett took first place in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 31:18.6. In addition, senior Phil Agee stands in first place halfway through the decathlon with a score of 3,361. Other men’s individual winners include Towson junior Javionni Gooden with a long jump distance of 7.03 meters, Delaware senior Jon DiNozzi who pole vaulted 4.80 meters, and UNC Wilmington’s Chad Joyner who achieved a toss of 56.82 meters in the hammer throw.
The William & Mary women captured two individual titles on Friday with junior Ali Henderson winning the 5,000-meter run in 16:51.7 and junior Katrina Menard claiming first in the 10,000-meter run in 37:19.8. In addition, senior Alarice Cesareo stands in first in the heptathlon with a score of 2,941. UNC Wilmington used strong performances in the field events to claim three first-place trophies on day one. Freshman Ashley Wildhaber won the pole vault with a height of 3.51 meters to break the previous CAA record of 3.40 meters set by William & Mary’s Charlotte LaRoche last year. Sophomore Christie Schreckengost won the javelin with a toss of 41.46 meters. Senior Michelle Giudici won the hammer with a throw of 50.20 meters. George Mason junior long jumper Kim Morgan captured first place with a distance of 5.73 meters.
Track and field action continues at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday beginning with competition in the heptathlon and decathlon.
