Well, I went to grad school at VCU, and used to be able to tolerate their fans. It just seems they have a little pe*is envy over their many straight wins over ODU. I would be talking serious trash if ODU had won that many over VCU (or beaten them at all) in the last few years. However, I think it is a sad state of a program when they are hanging their hats on beating us. Since we have had losing seasons "galore" in the last few years, shouldn't you have beaten us at LEAST six times in a row?

I don't judge ODU's success on whether or not they beatn VCU. If we beat them, great. I will be happy, and I will return the trash talking to the Ram fans. However, I want to get back to the postseason. Somewhere we haven't been since the NIT victory over Seton Hall in Cal's senior year (when was VCU's last postseason appearance)?

Congrats to VCU for beating us 6 times in a row (or is it 7, I lost count). ODU fans have higher aspirations for our program, and I apologize for that. I'm sorry we are talking about our recruiting class so much. We are excited on Hampton Blvd. Can you say the same about VCU? I doubt it.

How is your recruiting class looking? Keep talking about B.A. Walker, who will be a good CAA player...if you can land him.

Go Blue.

Commish, you exactly right. For all their hot air you'd have thought they'd been to 5 final fours the last few 5 years. I believe the last time they went to the post-season was in 1995. I think we went in 96, 97 and 99. We've sucked since then. But we are on the rebound. But hats off to VCU - they did accomplish something we've never done in the CAA and that was finish dead last! As bad as we've been lately, we've never been that bad. I actually sorry for Towson, had they been in the conference then they'd have finally had someone worse than them. Sarcasm aside, I am happy for VCU to have turned it around. But you are so correct that a program is in sorry shape when it's sole identity is shaped around beating ODU. You know if they'd just beat UNCW now and then they might have made the postseason. Shouldn't beating the top team be your priority?

So far our recruiting class looks like this.

Alexander Harper - A 6"3" point guard who led his team to the state championship in South Carolina. He was selected all state first team his senior year and was also the MVP of the South Carolina vs North Carolina allstar game going 11 for 11 from the field scoring 22pts. He will have 3 year at VCU and will give us something we haven't had in awhile and that is a TRUE point guard.

Drew Johnson - A 6"4" lefty guard who averaged around 20pts and was also selected to the North Carolina all star team. Not alot is known about Drew kind of like Henderson but one North Carolina recruiting service had him a A10/CAA caliber player. We still have 3 ships left to give and so far I'm happy will who we have signed.

Good luck with the other 3 I hope one is BA Walker.

Blue Beast has it right. The rivalry is becoming real again.

There's absolutely no hanging our entire program on the fact that we beat you guys six times. Quite frankly, it's the best trash to talk to you guys. If it makes some of you feel better to think that our entire existence hangs on whether or not we beat a team that has not reached .500 in at least two years, then by all means go ahead.

But I have the same conversations with my UR friends. It usually goes: "we're running out of gyms in Richmond to play you guys. Eventually we're bound to find one you can beat us in." I certainly don't get in front of the UNCW guys and say "yeah, well we beat ODU six times in a row."

Facts are facts--when ODU and VCU fans get together, the best measure is how they play against each other. And if my memory serves, we have beaten you six times in a row.

All smack aside, I do hope your recruiting pans out so that we can be two 20-8 teams talking it up in late February.

And before you go talking about the sorry shape of the VCU program, remember that we're the ones with the #2 seed and three returning starters and you're the ones talking about high school seniors getting you back to .500.

Ramball, concerning your two incoming recruits:
Harper did not start for Palm Beach CC, and, according to the info I could get about him from Yahoo, accomplished little while down there. I could not find one boxscore where he had more than 6 pts, or 4 assists, and I found boxscores for 7 games.

Drew Johnson is not listed as a top 400 recruit in any of the recruiting websites. The only place I found any info was rivals, and he was a NR, which is less than a 1 star recruit. Dahi and Lidonde are both 3 star recruits by the same service.

I can find very little info on either of these guys. When Harper came out of high school I believe he was ranked around 200 by hoopscoop.

Johnson, I just don't know. My impression is that Harper will be solid, but never spectacular. I think Johnson will probably be a career bench player.

We need the final 2 to be more impressive. We have 3 to give, but might only go with 2. Capel has said he will only sign 2 unless he finds a 3rd guy with impressive credentials. Be on the lookout for a DI transfer. We usually have a lot more success with these guys than those we get via JC.

Remember, we got Nick George kind of late last year. I think Jeff is working on something.....

What I find interesting is who we have offered in the 04 class. I can find more information about next year's players than this years! It seems Capel is going to borrow a page out of Blaine Taylor's book.

88Ram, that's the way to go. Let's face it, guys like Brian Henderson and Drew Johnson are lucky to be signed by schools like ours', not the other way around. Go for the better players, have a fall back plan, and see if you can't score a few blue chippers. Brian Henderson has a lot better shot at being successful with a few big time players around him, than he does if he's expected to carry a team.
Maybe VCU can still grab a good late signing, though I have not found any info on them being involved with any of the remaining top 200 or so.

Those Capel guys like to recruit in the Carolina's. Not sure thats the best place to be recruiting.

Capel Jr. inherited a good team and coached well. He hasn't won anything yet and hasn't really recruited anyone yet. He's young and should have remained as an assistant for a few more years, gaining more administrative experience. Probably, he can coach and recruit but not sure if he knows how to operate/manipulate the entire program, from an administrative point.

Big Blue Beast

I think the younger Capel is FAR MORE charismatic then his Dad, I get the feeling the kids really want to play for him.
Not that they didn't want to play for his Dad but that the younger Capel would have a far easier time getting the most out of his guys.

Mr. Jablomi
04-18-2003, 10:56 AM
Capel brought in George and Godwin, both good recruits. Kevin Moore is a D2 player. The two they have this year sound like mediocre, at best, recruits. One could not start for a community college, the other I can't find any info on, other than his name and HS. Not ONE service had him top 400. I don't think these guys should be taking shots at Henderson or Val, that's for sure.

Hey Commish, I hope your little post will help you sleep better at night. I love how ODU fans constantly harp on "We have higher aspirations for our team....postseason...blah, blah, blah" to cover up the fact that your team has primarily SUCKED for the past four seasons. That was some major SPIN in your post to cover up what your program has become recently.

I, being a VCU fan and alum, am STEAMED about the fact that we haven't been to the post season in SEVEN SEASONS. Prior to that our longest drought from being away from the postseason was three seasons. We have won 16, 21, and 18 games over the past three years and don't have a single banner to show for it. So, if you think I am happy about that, you're nuts. Unfortunately, about the only fans we hear about our SEVEN SEASONS of postseason futility is from ODU fans. This is why the mention of our six game winning streak against you AND your FOUR STRAIGHT LOSING SEASONS to simply point out "You should talk!?!?!?"

Do I have pe*is envy over your recruiting class? HELL YES! Why wouldn't I? It's a great CAA class and no doubt will raise the stature of your basketball program. But please, hold off on the "we are better than you because our aspirations are higher" spin.

VCU was shorted the last 2 years from the NIT, definitely should have been in over GMU in 02. I enjoy the fact that the highlight of VCUs season is beating ODU – what else is there to look forward to on Broad street. Long live the ODU-VCU rivalry.
VCU fans don’t bother me except the one’s that try to sell Capel-III as the next coming. Wait until he’s won something with his own recruited players before you tell me he’s a great coach. I could have coached last year’s VCU team to a second place finish.

The original five (excl ODU) always relishes beating the Monarchs of Old Dominion. Its hell to be the hunted, even after four losing seasons.

Commish starts all this garbage, but admits that if the "shoe was on the other foot" he would also be doing some serious trash talking on the VCU board.

See, here's the difference ..........

We have something legit to talk trash about.

You guys don't and are still all over our board talking about the greatest class ever recruited by a CAA school and our lack of talent.

Trust me, we have bigger aspirations than beating ODU 6 times in a row, but hey, if it's there why not use it ???

As Commish said, you guys sure as hell would be !!

You have no argument on this one !!

Actually you have no argument in ANY of your male sports against us right now. Sorry, just stating the facts on this one.

No argument? I have to agree with you, Mr. VCU, that recent history is on the side of VCU. But while it may not be much, ODU fans have every right to tout this year's recruiting class in the same way that you tout the 6 wins in a row. I think we all admit we like the trash talking at least a little (provided it doesn't get personal) and I think you would be taling the same way if you were in ODU's position. Is either side right? No, no one can now which program is going to perform better next year, but we can have fun acting like we do.

Well,, I think Gattison is from NC,, and there was another local kid from here,, Micheal Jordon.. he was from NC.. Oh,, you weren't just refering to Wilmington,,? you meant to whole state was not a place to recruit ?? Nah, you don't want a list of players that are from N C ( didn't mean they played at a N C school, but from here. ) Old one Earl the Pearl Monroe. David Thompson, Mid Old one, Danny Manning,James Worthy, recent one Tracy McGrady..

MrVCU when the streak ends next year VCU really will have nothing to brag about on Broad Street. Three of the six games we clearly should have won - but that’s the breaks just like the NIT ignoring VCU.

The highlight of VCUs recruiting class is the return of Rhodes Scholar Johnny Story.

The recruiting year is not done yet! When all is said and done, I think in the CAA the top 3 classes will be ODU, GMU, and UNCW. There are too many questions about JMU's kids to make me rank them up there.

VCU could crack the top 3 depending on who they sign. Last year, Capel got two good ones very late. Lets give it some time. I don't see anyone surpassing ODU unless they sign Lebron.
