Can we all just put an end to these mindless, stupid, rotorical posts!
There is so many better things to discuss.
In about a week our message board is going to be invaded by internet sports junkies (like us), who are fans of teams from bigger conferences! What will they think about the average CAA fan after reading some of these threads?
Anyways, here are some of my pre-season picks:
Best Dance Team: VCU , UNCW is going to contend for this title!
Best Web Site: Tie VCU and GMU, both along with ODU can play home games on the web.
Most loyal Fans: JMU, with a record like that and they still post! Close second is Drexel, Who else would wear yellow to a away game!
Best Radio crew: Hofstra, they have traveled to the CAA media day now two years in a row, and quite frankly they are pretty good.
Best Student Fans: UNCW, always faithful to a team who has an average of 6100 people in a 5500 seat arena! Incredible! Did the SID go to the University of Richmond!
Best Cities to road trip: Boston and Atlanta
Worst Mascot Uniform: Nevermind

To our defense, you should check out the ACC boards and the Duke/UNC pissing. Makes us look clean.
Best pre-game bar in the CAA?

ODU needs a good pregame bar. I'm not sold on Boar's Nest.
monarchmac23507

Boar's nest is ok, but is small and fairly expensive and the food is not very good. For the purpose of catching a buzz before the game right next to the stadium, it works. However, it would be nice to see $2 pitchers and wings, mozzerella sticks, nachos, and chicken fingers on the menu. Try Perfectly Frank sometime. Their beer is cheap on the weekdays and their food is good. Not a bar atmosphere though.
I would think there had to be a good bar in Philly for pre game festivities ????
Boar's Head is a drag, even for a old dude like me. Has no sense of place at all. The Tap House on 21st street at least has a great beer selection.
Best Radio crew: Hofstra, they have traveled to the CAA media day now two years in a row, and quite frankly they are pretty good.
If I am not mistaken they have gone every year since the new caa.

I actually went to the Drexel game last year and there are no good bars around that part of town. We found a pizza place about a half mile away (actually more at Penn), but it was dead. We parked in fromnt of the 7-Eleven at 34th and Lancaster. Best thing to do would have been to go to Center City and find a place and take the subway in. Any Drexel fans please weigh in because when I go this year, I hope to find a better scene around campus.

It's really not surprising to hear that ODU, Norfolk doesn't have a good pregame bar.

Cavanaugh's and the New Deck are two decent places to have a beer before/after a game at DU. Unfortunately (even if you're only looking) all the girls are from Drexel or Penn, which have to be two of the ugliest female student bodies in America.

Mr. J, where are they located?

There are plenty of great bars within 1-1.5 miles of ODU to pick from in Norfolk.
The trouble is all of the good "right next to the campus" bars were leveled to make way for the Constant Center and parking garages !!
I chose the Boar's Nest due to it's proximity to the Constant Center. Another somewhat close one is O'Sullivan's. After that there is Ghent....San Antonio Sam's is my favorite over there.

I can't wait for Baxter's sports bar to open downtown. A buddy of mine is opening it (same guy that owns Sterlings at the Tazewell Hotel). I had a talk with him and he will be supporting ODU hoops. Maybe I can get him to throw pre-game socials. Problem is then you need a driver

How could you go to a Drexel game and miss Cavanaugh's?
P.S. You're right about the girls Heywood, they're pretty rough. I had one hit me with a beer bottle on a dance floor in Cherry Hill. It was her way of asking me to dance. Luckily, she introduced me to her friend, who was much better looking and much more lady-like.

I dont hate the "Boars Nest", but its pretty watered down for pregame!
Usually I like the pregame at the game, but its not long enough.
Would love to cordinate with you guys and have a pregame sometime!
I have three kids and dont take them to the game yet! They are too young right now. I tried before and all I got was my wife giving me that "look" throughout the entire game. You know the "why asent you watching the kids look", which alway ends up with a huge arguement.

And Fairfax County does? That's right, if you want to take your life into your hands and cross 8 lanes of traffic, there is always Tysons Corner.
what is gunston, just out of curiousity? mason should adopt grimace as their mascot for '07

Actually we have Fat Tuesday, BWU, Brion's Grill, Damon's(on campus), TT Reynolds, and Firehouse all within walking distance. Well Fat's, Brion's and Damon's the other three would be a little hike but do able. What bars are there in Tyson's and who would go there if you wanted to pregame before a game? Do you have any idea about Northern VA or are you just naming the names of places you heard?

There isn't a great pregame or postgame bar because no one goes to our games anyways and none of the nearby bars are anything special. Some of us meet at Cav's or New Deck before the games (maybe 10 of us at most). Cav's is on 39th street between Walnut and Chestnut, it's a little bit of a walk. New Deck is much closer, on Sansom Street between 34th and 35th streets. Sansom is 2 blocks south of the DAC. There is also Brownies' 38th street if you are planning on a college bar/club after a night game. That's on 38th and Chestnut. If you make the trip to the DAC and plan on a bar before or after the game let some of us Drexel folks know and maybe we'll meet up with you. There are also plenty of good bars in the city.

ODU has The Edge (formerly Crazy Charlie's), Chicho's, Boar's Nest, Pizza Inn, and O'Sullivan's within walking distance. I'd still like a drinking hole like the ol' Pub that currently sits under the foundation of the finest basketball facilities in the CAA. Masonfan, I think you're overestimating what constitutes a "good" pregame bar. Richmond has a lot of good sports bars within walking distance. I'm sure that Drexel, UNCW, and Hofstra have their share too. Nobody considers Manassas a "hap'nin" place.

Is there a bar in the CAA that supports their school as much as Brion's Grill does? Trust me I know bars and, Brion's, BWU, Fats, all great pregame bars and Damon's, which is on campus now, should really be great for students. Firehouse and TT's aren't really great pregame bars, they are ok, but the others would be a better choice.
Also, to whoever said "we are pissing about bars now" I think this has been a great discussion. I for one would like to know the local watering holes if I ever go to Norfolk for a game, or any other venue.

You haven't been down 45th, 46th, 47th streets lately have you, Met? That area is about 70% college students these days. With the addition of the Village, Killam Ave. no longer lives up to its name.
The last three times I've been to Tiki's there were 40 year old fat women celebrating for a bachelorette party. I guess its a happy day when a man agrees to marry a 4-10 230lb woman. I'm glad you had fun the one day that Tiki's wasn't overrun by 18yr olds with fake IDs and old women who are looking to cheat on their husbands.

Heywood, if you go to the tournament in St. Thomas, take your clubs and play Mahogany Run. It's a goat ranch by US standards (except the greens, they're ok), but it's the "jewel" of the islands. What it lacks in condition, it makes up for in scenery. If you par all 3 of the "Devil's Triangle" you win something. I had pars on the first two holes and laid up about 80 yards in front of the green of the last, a par 5. Hit my pitch over the green into the side of the mountain and made bogey. So remember, they're full of sh!t on the yardage on that last hole. Don't let them sucker you.
I had a case down there with a lawyer who has a great house on the course (side of the mountain, looking out onto the Caribbean). There's a par three right near there - hit right into the mountain on the right; the ball will feed right down onto the green and, depending on the hole location, you should have a little birdie putt.

No St Thomas for me, as I'm 50/50 to be in Europe during the tourney. Besides, my wife is not interested in college hoops, and would kill me for taking her to a three-four day hoops tourney, even down there.
I'm playing in a 5 day pro/am in Vegas in February, guys only, and it's pretty costly, so that's the trip I'm taking just for me.

As a "CAA Traveler" I would have to say that ODU is the place I like to go to the most. Probably because I am from that area and I know Norfolk like the back of my hand :)
Here's one:
Best Alumni Sports Fans: VCU (they travel EVERYWHERE)
Best Student Support: UNCW (I will NEVER FORGET how hostile they make Trask)
Best Student Travelers: Rowdy Rams (VCU - they travel probably more than any other CAA student body)
Best Post-Game food: Wendy's! (Everyone wins with this one! Even JMU has a Wendy's close by)
Easiest Arena to Takeover: Towson
I would agree that NU is the game that everyone is looking forward to. Don't know what to expect.
