View Full Version : Less than a day Away...Barea CAA 1st Team?

Will Barea the most touted player of the two new teams make the all-CAA first team on the preseason poll? And with all five first-teamers returning, who would he replace?...I say yes and Goldsberry
I have to agree. I think this kid is going to be a stud.

If he's not, somebody's not doing their homework.

While he's been scrutinized in the media for his high profile "punch" during the AE game, and for his fiery style of play and his duene on the court, no one can doubt the kid can play.
He seems to play his best against better competition - see his summer play for the Puerto Rican National team.
He's good defensively, not great, but offensively, he can score if he wants/needs to, he can pass, and without a whiner/complainer like Marcus Barnes (who needed 12 shots a night or he pouted), he'll be a better player this year. This is his best supporting cast at NU, and once he got accustomed to Shawn James on the court, I think he became a better all around player - remember James sat for a couple at the beginning of the season, played a few games, then sat for a few more.
There are times when I seriously question his shot selection, and that's what bugs me about him.
I'm going to use a baseball analogy here. He's NU's AJ Pierzynski - if he's on your team you love the "extra" something he brings to the game, although he does some things that makes your skin cringe. If he's wearing the other team's jersey, you can't stand the guy as he always seems to be in the center of some controversy.

NU, he's one of the best point guards I've seen since . . . Rolando Lamb.

We've started a game theme for the NU-VCU game at Matthews..
"Silence of Lamb's Rams"
;)
The crappy thing is my only comeback for that is "Well Reggie went 15-17 in that game and lost" - so I've got no ammo to counter your Rolando Lamb!
Hey NU, I saw you have a Pitino on your staff. Is there a connection between Rick and your HC?

Yes based on the hype. I have never seen him play, but I am looking forward to see how he matches up with BJ and Drew.

VCU's gonna have to arrange to have Rolando up in NE for the game.
I guess VCU and NU are the only CAA teams that have played each other in an NCAA game.

I think Ron and Rick know each other from the recruiting wars, that's about it - unless there's a connection I don't know about. Pitino tried to recruit Barea to Louisville, the story goes, but he wasn't 100% convinced he could play at that level.
Funny thing is that when Pitino was at BU, he and Calhoun had some big time battles, and there was no love lost between the two schools.
I met "Little Ricky" at practice yesterday and he looks like he's 16, but I saw him running some drills, and he knows his stuff.
Little Ricky goes by Richard - like it's going to matter, he looks like his dad.

I'm sure that he is a great player and it doesn't matter because everyone already knows that he's good. He will post big #'s and will likely be on the post season team regardless. To say that he replaces Goldsberry is very possible because you can't run off Alex and that just leaves three others. Goldsberry will never get love on a board like this because he is the exact opposite of what you typically see in a first teamer but coaches know. It might be a charge taken, a timely steal, a good stay/box to get clear the defensive board, a nice assist, or his excellent shooting ability. He's one of my all-time favorite players for UNCW without a doubt and an under-rated performer by many! With that said...Barea sounds like a monster and I'm glad he's a senior!!

I know all too well how valuable Goldsberry is -- lord knows he has lit Drexel up his whole career down there in Wilmington. As much as I hate him when he's up against Drexel, its hard not to respect him. I would personally vote for Goldsberry over Barea on the 1st team because he is a proven CAA PG. But I can't see the media doing the same.

Barea? Duh.
I don't think anyone's going to miss. I hope that they do it this way:
Preseason POY:
Alex Loughton
First Team:
Nick George
Jose Juan Barea
John Goldsberry
Harding Nana
Loren Stokes
Second Team:
Isaiah Hunter
Lamar Butler
Jai Lewis
Antoine Agudio
Arnauld Dahi
Those are the 11 players, IMO. I think it's cut and dry this preseason. They should name the POY and name 5 to the 1st team (5 others).

I was flying cross country last week and had some CAA games from the tourney burned to CD so I could watch them on the flight.
A team of 5 John Goldsberry's would win a heck of a lot more than it loses. Man, he's GOOD, I'd take him in a minute.
In the CAA profile I'm writing for Dieharddogs, I jokingly refer to him as the "Set Shot Buford" of the CAA. Buford was the player on the Pittsburgh Pisces in "The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh" who would to anything to help his team - take a few charges, play tough D, and the guy didn't look much like a basketball player.
I'm looking forward to seeing him down in Wilmington.

NUHF:
Please dont use AJ as an example, his own teammates hat him, and he is the most disliked player in the game... Next time use... ANYONE else
(sorry I just hate AJ, so much so I refuse to try and spell his last name)

How could Barea not be a fist team all-CAA when nationally he is ranked as one of the top point guards in the COUNTRY along with Loren Stokes.
6. Jose Juan Barea, Northeastern: A 5-11 senior, he's a one-man wrecking crew (22.2 ppg, 7.3 apg, 4.3 rpg) and would be a star on any team in the country.
20. Loren Stokes, Hofstra 6-3 Jr. 18.3 3.5 Skinny dude is unstoppable in CAA

I only brought this up because immediately after the season everyone was saying he wouldn't be over the punch in the AEast Final and the CAA bias...good to see most people changed their minds and congrats to Barea on making it

I think he comes to the CAA with a clean slate. I could care less about what negative things happened when he was in the America East. Barea will be great for our conference, and I for one can't wait to see him play. On second thought, I hope he comes down with the dreaded ODU flu bug the two nights before we have to face him.
