It used to be that nearly all D-I scholarship basketball players signed their National Letter-of-Intent while playing for their local American public or parochial H.S. This is not the norm at GMU. Of the 24 players signed by Coach L here (excluding D-I transfers), only 9 (or 37.5%) came here directly from their local American H.S. (& only Rob Anderson from a VA Northern Region school) The others attended a private school (either for H.S. or for post-graduate), a foreign school, or a JUCO.
Enrolled Directly from a Local American H.S.:
Tremaine Price - Parkdale (MD)
Erik Herring - Thornton Township (IL)
Rob Anderson - Wakefield (Arlington, VA)
Tyrone Tiggs - Malone (FL)
Deon Cooper - Columbia Central (TN)
Lamar Butler - Oxon Hill (MD)
Colin Wyatt - Jamestown (VA)
Trent Wurtz - Sheyboygan North (WI)
Gabe Norwood - State College (PA)
Others:
Jason Miskiri - JUCO transfer
"Q" Randall - Thayer Academy (MA)
Jon Larranaga - St. John's Prospect Hall (MD)
Jesse Young - Peterborough College Institute (Ontario, Canada)
Rob Sullivan - Seton Hall Prep (NJ)
Richard Tynes - Hargrove Military Academy (VA)
Raoul Heinen - Callant Lyceum (Holland)
Darren Tarver - JUCO transfer
Steven Bonner - JUCO transfer
Jai Lewis - Maine Central Institute
Mark Davis - JUCO transfer
Tony Skinn - JUCO transfer
Kevin Mickens - JUCO transfer
Jesus Urbina - Amelia Academy (VA)
Makan Konate - Worcester Academy (MA)
Is it the norm here because of the style of play favored by Coach L or due to academic qualifications? Is this trend prevalent at other D-I schools? If so, how will it affect the local H.S. programs? For example, one reason given why no Northern Region school has won the VA Boys AAA Basketball Championship since Springfield's Robert E. Lee (Associate Head Coach Bill Courtney's & G/F Mark Davis' H.S.) won in 1981 is that many of the best local players transfer to private schools.
